Mediterranean Spurge – Euphorbia Characias “Wulfenii”
It is a typical Euphorbia for Mediterranean gardens and more. It occupies up to 1 m in width and grows more than 1 m in height resulting in a perfectly rounded shape. It is highly undemanding, does not tolerate water stagnation and has good drought tolerance; it also tolerates poor soils. It combines well with many other plants like roses, myrtle, Phlomis (Jerusalem sage, Lampwick plant), Teucrium (germanders) and red-leaved herbaceous plants with similar exposure needs. In a garden the spotlight is on this plant thanks to the acid green flower heads at the tip of the stems. Does not require pruning, though dead stems at the base must be removed at the end of Winter. A poisonous plant, it exudes a white milky sap that is a skin irritant and is difficult to remove from fabrics. The use of gloves is advised.
