R. Gallica Officinalis  (from the Middle Ages)
This is probably the oldest Gallica rose grown today.  It was used by the Romans to make perfume, rose wine, and for medical purposes (officinalis).
It bears large, dark crimson very double roses. It is strongly fragrant. The abundant flowering creates a splendid blaze of colour. The vigorous shrub produces numerous basal shoots. It is often used in the gardens of historical villas as a low border.
